BK21 Information Technology

BK21 Business Plan

Brain Korea 21 is a human resource development program initiated by the Korean government designed to produce outstanding world class leaders for next decade. Since March 1, 2006, SNU Electrical and Computer Engineering department has been selected in both primary and secondary business as part of a division of information technology in applied sciences and provided with wide range of support.

BK21, comprised of SNU ECE and CSE, aims to lead new technological development in backbone industries by playing a role as the knowledge production base for the IT sector, to foster internationally competitive and creative researchers, and to promote industry connection programs between academia and industry for technology transfer and human resource development in IT sector.

Vision of SNU Brain Korea 21 Information Technology

  • Educate future oriented hi-tech professional engineers the country demands
  • Foster research capabilities for knowledge based high value national strategic projects
  • Achieve internationally recognized research outcomes comparable to the United States
  • Secure national competitiveness through efficient industry connection programs for research

Detailed research fields and its vision of BK21 Information Technology

In BK21 Information Technology, there are eight different detailed research fields. The followings are the names of those eight fields: Next-generation Semiconductor, Next-generation Mobile Communications, Imbedded Systems, Intelligent Robot and Control Systems, Electrical Power and Energy Systems, Electronic Display and Optical Engineering, Next-generation Computer and Network, Digital Contents and Software. The visions for each research fields are provided below.
  • (a) Next-generation Semiconductor Research
New market of smaller and portable electronics is imminent in the era of SoC(system-on-chip), emerging in the field of electronic applications including Computer, Communication, Control, and Home appliances. Moreover, semiconductor processing technology is expanding its foundation in the fields of biochip and biosensor.
  • (b) Next-generation Mobile Communications
The conversion of current low packet voice and data communication system to wire-wireless integrated system comprised of maximum speed limit of 100Mbps in a fast moving transit and 155 Mbps ~ 1Gbps in a fixed or slow moving transit is forthcoming. Ultimately, ubiquitous service platform based on a high speed communication will come at hand rather than the high speed communication itself.
  • (c) Imbedded Systems Research
Imbedded system is incorporated in various informational, communicational electronic device to provide additional functions. It is implemented in digital TV, mobile phones, and most of the IT devices in rapidly growing market and enlarging its territories to automobiles and medical devices. Although most of the technology associated with this field was imported, recent advancements has secured national competitiveness, promising a swift growth in this area.
  • (d) Intelligent Robot and Control Systems Research
Recently, robot technology is rising as one of the most important strategic industry of the next-generation. Intelligent ubiquitous robot technology will be implemented to produce human friendly robots which will embrace humans physically, mentally, and emotionally. Under this ubiquitous surroundings, various services of human-to-human, human-to-robot, and robot-to-robot will lay the groundwork for a brand new industry.
  • (e) Electrical Power and Energy Systems Research
We will contribute to the new growth engine industry by maximizing the value of existing power industries through a technological development that enables systematic connection, manufacture, and operation of all of the data that might arise from electrical power system and power market and by developing a core technology for next-generation battery and electrical automobiles of the future.
  • (f) Electronic Display and Optical Engineering Research
Referred to as twenty-first century technology of the future, it is playing a key role as a window for informational, biomedical, and cultural technology. It is embedded in most electronic devices including mobile phones, computers, and high-definition TV while enlarging its boundaries to a wall-mountable TV, scroll type display, and 3D television recently. World market for electrical display is under a rapid growth, and this is where we possess the highest national competitiveness.
  • (g) Next-generation Computer and Network Research
Crucial in IT electronics as well as automobiles, robots, industrial machines, and medical devices, next-generation computer will benefit system controls, multimedia, network, and artificial intelligence. Next-generation computer, now specialized in mobile phone, sensor system, and robot instead of PC and server as before, will bring about an enormous market. Internet infrastructure of the next-generation network interlinked with a sensor web is responsible for major tasks in providing a ubiquitous environment. Under the wireless access network, a user can receive high-speed data, voice, and video transmitted from a fixed or moving transit. Extensive market related to this service is expected near future.
  • (h) Digital Contents and Software
The importance of markets based on game related technology such as 3D graphics, online game engine, and digital characterization close to an actual image is skyrocketing due to a digitalization of culture, education, and most of the other areas. Existing business processes and medical technologies combined with a software, E-business, bio-computing, and medical computing are growing fast in a new applied market.
