SNU College of Engineering announced on the 13th that Hongjun An (24 years old), a 4th grade undergraduate student in ECE, applied deep learning technology to brain imaging and published a paper in “NeuroImage,” the top journal in the field of brain imaging. NeuroImage is the official journal of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping, and the paper acceptance rate is less than 11%. It is very unusual for an undergraduate student to publish a paper as the first author in such a journal. Hongjun An worked as an undergraduate intern at the Laboratory for Imaging Science and Technology (Advisor Jong-ho Lee, list.snu.ac.kr) from 3rd grade. In this research, Hongjun An developed a technique to improve the distortion of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) due to respiration by using deep learning technology. Using the research results, image distortion caused by respiration can be measured and corrected using an artificial neural network without additional equipment. In addition, the results of the artificial neural network is interpretable, overcoming the difficulty of interpretation with most applications of deep learning technology. The results of this study are expected to be especially useful for ultra-high magnetic resonance imaging of 7 Tesla or more.
