Professor Yongtaek Hong, SID Display Week 2018 (Electronic Times, 20180527)

Korea’s small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) and startups boasted their advanced display technologies at the SID (Society for Information Display) Display Week 2018 where display experts gathered from around the globe. Through the showcase, it was proven that we are approaching a new generation market through Organic Light-Emitting Diode(OLED) and AR/VR (Augmented/Virtual Reality) technology.

MNtech and SNU, RAONTECH, and ANI exhibited their products and technologies at the SID Dispay Week 2018, which was held from the 22nd to the 24th, local time, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, USA. MNtech and SNU, as well as RAONTECH, competed with universities and startups across the world in their respective booths in the I-Zone, a display space for startups. Through a separate evaluation process, SID supports the demonstration of new technologies and products from university research centers, startups, and SMEs. As the exhibition in the I-Zone mainly consists of new technologies armed with novel ideas, it attracts as much attention as the general zone each year.

MNtech and SNU demonstrated a 6-inch metal mesh sensor that realizes both force sensing and multi-touch. Jointly developed as a national research project, this technology combines force sensing and multi-touch modules, which were separately implemented in the past, into one single module. This makes it possible to save production costs and slim down product designs.

“As we conclude the national research project, we aim to work with MNtech to commercialize the technology for domestic and foreign companies,” said SNU Professor Yongtaek Hong, who has led this research project.

RAONTECH exhibited a microdisplay solution based on LCoS(Liquid Crystal on Silicon), which is a liquid crystal display placed on a silicon wafer, for high resolution AR and VR. Unlike other microdisplay developers, this utilizes the advantages of system semiconductor technology and supplies controllers and optical engine modules as well as panels.

RAONTECH exhibited the optical engine module ‘R-Vista70’, and the RDP series consisting of various sizes and resolutions including a 0.7-inch microdisplay ‘RDP700Q’ of WQHD (2560×1440) resolution.

Brian Kim( 김보은), CEO of RAONTECH, said, “The LCoS method is more suitable for AR devices as well as VR devices because it allows high resolution and high visibility even outdoors. In the AR market, Full-HD products will gradually increase in number.”

ANI presented ‘CM-H600’ and ‘CM-T600’, which are colorimeters for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) that were developed for seven years with the company’s own technology. Their strength is that they have high color accuracy, especially even at low luminance. Having supplied to a world-renowned small and medium-sized OLED manufacturer, the company is seeking chances to expand its market.
