Offering world-class, research-oriented undergraduate programs, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering takes great pride in nurturing the creative minds of all students, equipping them with the global competences needed to succeed in the elds of electronics, electrical, and computer engineering. In 1992, in order to better serve the needs of the student body, the three departments of Electrical Engineering (founded in 1946), Electronics Engineering (founded in 1947), and Control and Instrumentation Engineering (founded in 1978) were consolidated into what is now the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Currently, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering boasts 65 dedicated faculty members, 910 graduate students, and 976 undergraduate students studying and conducting research in diverse elds, including: power and electrical energy systems, communication and signal processing, robotics and control systems, display and optical engineering, semiconductor and circuits, computer hardware and software, embedded systems, and bioelectronics.
The majority of undergraduate and graduate students at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are completing their studies under well-deserved but generous scholarships. In particular, graduate students under the BK21 PLUS program have had the opportunity to extensively publish their research work at international academic conferences and have been oered internships worldwide. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering also shows its care of the total wellbeing of its students by operating a student counseling center staed by professionals in the mental health field.
The members of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are conducting world-class multidisciplinary research using state-of-the-art equipment in close collaboration with various on-campus research institutes including the Korea Electrical Engineering and Science Research Institute, Institute of New Media and Communications, Inter-University Semiconductor Research Center, Automation and Systems Research Institute, Big Data Institute, and Electric Power Research Institute. Among the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, 16 members are the Fellows of the IEEE, OSA, SID, SPIE, ACM, and IOP, and 6 are members of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) and the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST). These important designations are evidence of just some of the ways in which Department faculty are actively engaged in the world of academia both in and out of the country.
As part of its global focus, the Department is also actively pursuing global collaboration and student exchange programs with universities worldwide, including: Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and Harvard University. The Department has many scholarship programs in place for talented international students to pursue their degrees with the help of financial support. Some of these programs, such as the SNU Global Scholarship, SNU President Fellowship, and Graduate Scholarship for Excellent Foreign Students, are funded by the Oce of International Aairs while others, such as the SEE Scholarship, are nanced by alumni donations. The Department also places emphasis on diversifying its faculty by recruiting top talents from all over the world and currently has a total of 3 non-Korean professors on faculty as of 2016. The Department will continue its eorts to recruit top global faculty members in the coming years.
Ceaselessly striving to develop its international competitiveness through robust education and research, the Department has been placed in the Top 20 according to QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) Top Universities, ranking 19th for its electrical and electronics program in 2014 and 15th for its engineering and technology program in 2015.
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will continue to put forth every eort to nurture young minds and take the lead in research by exploring new frontiers and pursuing excellence in education.
