Computer architectures
exploiting recent developments in silicon nanophotonic technology

Abstract:
We expect that manycore microprocessors will push performance per chip from the 10 gigaflop to the 10 teraflop range in the coming decade. To support this increased performance, memory and inter-core bandwidths will also have to scale by orders of magnitude. Pin limitations, the energy cost of electrical signaling, and the non-scalability of chip-length global wires are significant bandwidth impediments. Recent developments in silicon nanophotonic technology have the potential to meet these off- and on-stack bandwidth requirements at acceptable power levels.
In this presentation, we will review several computer architecture proposals exploiting these silicon nanophotonic technology options. They primarily target to introduce optical interconnect to processor-memory or core-to-core data communication replacing copper-based wires.  Some proposals also try to apply silicon nanophotonics to implement a subset of control logic like arbiters.  Then we will present an example design for a manycore architecture called Corona which utilizes dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) for on- and off-chip communication together with the devices which will be needed to implement such a communication infrastructure.  Finally, we will enumerate practical issues of optical interconnects that should be resolved before silicon nanophotonics can be a compelling alternative of copper-based wires in future manycore systems.
Biography:
Jung Ho Ahn is an assistant professor at Seoul National University, Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology.  He worked at HP Labs exploiting nanophotonics to connect intra-/inter-chip computation and storage resources as well as studying advanced memory systems.  Jung Ho received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he worked on Merrimac and Imagine projects applying stream computing to multimedia and scientific application domains.  He has more than 20 technical papers and received multiple best paper awards.
