A Path Towards Productive Design and Verification of Analog/Mixed-Signal Systems

Abstract :  
Over the past 50 years, we have seen phenomenal growth in the complexity of digital systems, while the growth in analog complexity has remained stagnant. For example, the design and verification of analog circuits still rely largely on manual efforts. This talk finds the root cause from a tool perspective: digital CAD tools effectively leverage the design intent of digital circuits (e.g. Boolean) as the abstraction models to increase design productivity, while analog tools simply don’t. This talk asserts that linear system models can serve as this abstraction for analog circuits and demonstrates how this can enable new ways to design, optimize, and validate analog circuits. It also claims that the linear abstraction can be further extended to mixed-signal systems, where significant improvements in the performance/power trade-offs are expected but the new challenges for their design and verification remain.

Biography:
Jaeha Kim is currently an Assistant Professor at Seoul National University and his research interests include low-power mixed-signal systems and their design methodologies. He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Seoul National University in 1997, and received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1999 and 2003, respectively.
Prior to joining Seoul National University in 2010, Dr. Kim was with True Circuits, Inc. as Circuit Designer from 2001 to 2003, with Inter-university Semiconductor Research Center in Seoul National University as Post-doctoral Researcher from 2003 to 2006, and with Rambus, Inc. as Principal Engineer from 2006 to 2009.  Most recently from 2009 to 2010, he was with Stanford University as Acting Assistant Professor.
Dr. Kim is a recipient of the Takuo Sugano award for outstanding far-east paper at 2005 International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) and the Low Power Design Contest Award at 2001 International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED).
