- Abstract
Nanotechnology has been identified as a key emerging technology that has the potential to generate new and improved sources of economic growth. Five areas namely biotechnology, medicine, agriculture, energy and environment have been identified for the development of nanotechnology in Malaysia. MEMS and nanotechnology are multi-disciplinary technological revolutions and these terms would be frequently used in the future. MEMS devices generally are in the micrometer size range though they are gradually shrinking into the nanometer scale emerging as NEMS. In Malaysia, IMEN (Institute of Microengineering &Nanoelectronics) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia is one of the research centers spearheading the research in MEMS and nanotechnology. The institute focuses on five major research themes, namely MEMS and nanoelectronics, Photonics and Nanophotonics Technology, Organic and Printed Electronics, Micro and Nanoelectronics Systems, and High Frequency Technology for Telecommunication. The R&D activities and business opportunities in MEMS and the application of nanotechnology in Malaysia will be discussed.
